Amen, brother. I don't ask my students for the solutions to math problems because I need more solutions to math problems, I ask because I need their brains to go through a process called "learning" and I don't know how else to make that happen.

This article is really helpful. At my school, we have had AI trainings almost monthly introducing new tools each time for several years! Some of us have been speaking out (the math department specifically) that this is not only not helping us, but is harming us. We advocate slowing down, using more graph paper, more scissors, physical compass and rulers, etc. Slow down to learn more. This isn’t “dumbing down,” this is investing kids with the privilege of creating their own physical models of the math, that they now have an investment in. Sure, we could put them on a digital tool for the same model. And sometimes we do, usually as step 2 after doing it on paper. I need this kind of rigorous support collecting the research (and sharp rhetoric) to back up my instructional intuition. Thanks, as always, Dan. You changed my whole perspective when I heard your Utah CTM keynote in 2014.
