Dan, I just returned from a summer in Budapest. I'm not sure if you know anything about this guy, but if you don't, here is a short article (8 pages) about his ideas. His theory seems to fit really well into what you have been talking about for the past decade or more.

day 1/week 1: class charters! i want to feel _______, i can accomplish this by doing _______, and WHEN things don’t go as planned, i will repair by _______. and it’s always a live document.

While it is normally aimed at post secondary the latest issue of the chronicle if higher education has two terrific articles on engaging students on the first day of class. There is no technology!!

Great hearing from these veteran teachers... all spending their first day to get buy-in and build trust. From the Talent Code (secrets of the world’s best schools): SECRET #2: Ignition [aka "buy-in/motivation" --- the best teachers start by winning the students/players trust] "Ignition is about the set of signals and subconscious forces that create our identity; the moments that lead us to say that is who I want to be.... that says, I am a musician [mathematician/writer/scientist etc].”
